Provincial Seals, the Gateshead-based retrofit specialist, is celebrating 20 years in business following a sustained period of rapid growth, national expansion and significant investment into green skills for the UK workforce.
Founded in 2005 by local businessman, George Greensitt – who actively remained in the business until his retirement at the age of 90 – Provincial Seals has evolved from a North East cavity wall insulation specialist into one of the UK’s most trusted retrofit partners.
Since 2020 alone, the business has transformed its offer to include insulation, ventilation, solar PV and a full suite of retrofit materials, alongside end-to-end retrofit design and coordination services.
It now supports an average of 30–40 live projects every week across the UK – delivering millions of pounds in energy bill savings for households nationwide.
Headcount has tripled from five to 15 employees and turnover has risen by more than 95% over the past five years. This growth comes as the UK retrofit sector prepares for the country’s largest ever residential infrastructure challenge, with around 29 million homes requiring retrofit interventions by 2050 to meet net zero targets. Provincial Seals’ retrofit coordination team has grown from one coordinator in 2021 to four today.
The Provincial Seals training arm, launched in 2020, has also rapidly expanded to help fill critical green skills shortages. Now offering NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, DEA training and specialist technical programmes, the division has delivered more than 500courses to 380+ students via its enhanced on-site teaching facilities.
Robert Foster, head of training and education at Provincial Seals, said:
“Reaching our 20th anniversary is a milestone our whole team can be proud of – from George’s founding vision in Gateshead in 2005, to becoming a trusted national retrofit partner supporting contractors and clients across the UK.
“Our growth reflects both the scale of the challenge ahead and the need for partners who can help simplify retrofit. The North East has a long history of industrial innovation, and this anniversary reinforces the region’s growing role in driving the UK retrofit economy forward.
“We’ve invested heavily to make the journey easier, faster and more coordinated for those delivering it on the ground – from practical materials supply and technical design support through to accredited training that actively grows capability in the sector.
“As we look ahead to the next 20 years, our focus remains the same: enabling the industry to deliver retrofit at scale, supporting lower energy costs for households, and helping to accelerate the UK’s path to net zero.”
